Pascal JAOUEN

Professeur

Prof. Pascal Jaouen – PR-CE, (University of Nantes) was born in 1960 in Brittany-France. He graduated with a Master's degree (1985) in « Environmental Engineering » from Polytech'Savoie - Ecole Polytechnique Universitaire - Chambéry and INP - Grenoble, then obtained his doctoral thesis (PhD) in Chemical Engineering from University of Nantes / ENSM (currently Ecole Centrale de Nantes) in 1989, and afterwards a HDR thesis (French qualification for doctoral research supervising) in 2000. P. Jaouen started his career as an assistant-professor in 1986 at the University Institute of Technology (IUT) of Saint-Nazaire and was recruited as a full professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Techniques of Nantes in 2001. In September 2012 he joined Polytech’ Nantes, the graduate school of engineering of the University of Nantes. Since 1997 he has held different positions: deputy-director (1997-2001) and then director (2001-2004) of ISOMer "Institut des substances et des organismes marins" in Nantes, and currently director of IUML (Institut Universitaire de la Mer et du Littoral), a multidisciplinary Research Federation (FR CNRS, http://www.univ-nantes.fr/iuml-cnrs) of 17 research units from University of Nantes, IFREMER and Ecole Centrale of Nantes (as a whole : 435 researchers and scientists, including 120 PhD students). Deputy –director of the laboratory GEPEA (UMR CNRS 6144 www.gepea.fr 192 persons), he used to be responsible (during 5 years) for the team "Marine bioprocesses and separations" of GEPEA. P. Jaouen has a long time experience with research on membrane separation processes (e.g. ultra- and nanofiltration) in marine biotechnology and aquaculture for (i) proteins, peptides, pigments and aromas recovery (ii) harvesting and up-grading of marine microalgae and cyanobacteria (membrane photo-bioreactors), (iii) extraction and fractionation of bioactive substances from seaweeds and fish by-products and (iv) water treatment and recycling in aquaculture. He has already been participating in several national, european and international projects (6th PCRDT-Seafoodplus, EU-Interreg-Valbiomar, EU-Interreg-Biotecmar, EU-SSP-Sprint, Melissa-European Space Agency and CMCU). An expert for ESF (European Science Foundation), for IFS (International Foundation for Science, Stockholm), for AERES, ANR, ADEME and ANRT (French research/educational agencies), for several ministries (France, Ireland and Québec) and for several French administrative regions P. Jaouen has developed scientific collaborations with IFREMER and universities of Brittany and Angers. He is a member of the executive board of “Europôle Mer”. Since 1992 he has supervised 21 PhD theses and is the author (or co-author) of more than 115 papers in international journals and book chapters (with ISSN and/or ISBN) and of 170 scientific communications or invited lectures in conferences. In the tuition field, he is a director of the department "Process and Bioprocess Engineering" at POLYTECH-Nantes, the Graduate School of Engineering of the University of Nantes http://www.polytech.univ-nantes.fr/ (University site of Gavy, City of Saint-Nazaire) and responsible 2005-2012 for the Master's degree "Bioprocesses and Marine Biotechnology".
